Mljet
The island of Mljet

The island of Mljet is part of the Dubrovnik area and is the eighth largest Croatian island located in the south. It is 20 nautical miles northwest of Dubrovnik. Divided by the canal of Mljet it is located south of the Peljesac peninsula, east of the island of Lastovo, southeast of the island of Korcula and west of the Elafiti islands.
It is the first island to be declared a national nature park and consists of a natural phenomenon, one small and one large lake connected by a 30m long channel. Under the influence of high tides, a strong sea current flows through this channel. Both lakes are inhabited by abundant marine life. On the Big Lake, there is the island of St. Mary with the Benedictine monastery from the 12th century, which is also a symbol of the Mljet National Park. This is the most visited part of the island.
